Gossen Metrawatt is a leading supplier of high end multimeters. Operating out of several countries around the world, this German manufacturer of test equipment has been churning out quality devices for decades. Along with solid multimeters, they also produce insulation testers and power supplies, among other equipment.
In short, Gossen Metrawatt multimeters are a cut above and one of only very few meter manufacturers that come close to the quality that Fluke offers.
Examples of high quality Metrawatt test meters:
MetraHit World
This one of Gossen’s more basic models, of the METRALINE series. Although it is actually one of their cheaper units, the MetraHit World is very well put together and performs admirably. It’s a True RMS multimeter with good accuracy and features (including capacitance, frequency and temperature) and will suit many fields of engineering. See full review…
Company Background
Metrawatt is a part of the GMC Instruments Group that also includes the likes of Dranetz and Kurth Electronic. The company began way back in the early 1900s when Siegfried Guggenheimer started marketing measuring instruments in Nuremberg (the current headquarters of the group). It would later become Metrawatt AG. Around the same time, Paul Gossen established a plant for producing measuring instruments and light meters. They eventually merged in 1992 as Gossen Metrawatt GmbH.
Today: The group today has factories in the US, UK and Switzerland, as well as in its native Germany.
Products
They produce all sorts of test and measuring equipment, such as multimeters, calibrators and power analyzers. The company’s main focus as a whole, however, is on light measuring meters for a range of applications, to include photography, industrial operations and in the medical world.
Product spread:
- Multimeters
- Clamp meters
- Measuring transducers
- Power supplies & energy management
- Power meters
- Installation/insulation testers
- Medical appliances
- Calibrators
- Current probes
- Thermometers & thermocouples
- Controller modules
They also supply a range of software for testers, process automation, power supplies and so on, along with a slew of accessories.
Multimeters
Gossen Metrawatt multimeters are under the Metrahit range of series’. These go from fairly standard devices up to higher end meters for advanced applications.
Metraline (2+, World, Metramax12, DMM15, 16) – universal, for most electrical engineering tasks
A Series (Base, Pro, Tech, Xtra) – rugged universal meters, to 12,000 counts
E Series (Ebase, Especial, Etech, Extra) – advanced and hi-res, to 60,000 counts
S Series (Ultra, Energy, Iso, Seculife…) – specialized, such as telecommunications and medical
Analog (Metramax 2, 3, 6, Metrahit 1A, 2A, Metraport 3A) – for more basic tasks
Each comes with a three-year warranty
There’s a lot of ‘metra’s’ in there and their naming structure can get a bit confusing. Just remember that the Metrahit is their catalogue of multimeters under brand name Metrawatt.

Testing Facilities
Along with offering training programs and solutions on energy management, Gossen has a top of the line calibration center, DakkS-accredited to DIN EN ISO / IEC17025.
The Gossen Metrawatt multimeter Calibration Center performs around 30,000 tests a year through dozens of experts in their field. Included in the calibration package are repairs, test reports, shipping and customs clearance. Along with calibrating at their test facility, they can perform tests around the world at customer’s facilities as well as calibrate other manufacturers’ meters.
